Business Volunteer Mentoring
The Business Voluntary Mentors project was set up
four years ago by the DTI, and is run in Derbyshire
through the BMS from Nottinghamshire Business Venture
(NBV). The service provides voluntary mentors (11
of whom are in Derbyshire) who are experienced businessmen
and women, either retired or still working, willing
to give their time to help others succeed in today's
difficult business environment.
The service is free to those starting up or running
a small business and pairs you with a suitable business
mentor who will support and help you for as long as
necessary.
Clients can apply directly to NBV or are referred
to NBV by Business Link, their Bank, or other support
services.
The initial meeting is an opportunity for the parties
to understand respectively the role of the Mentor
and the issues within the business.
The role of the Mentor is to listen, guide, explore,
suggest options, empower, show 'how to', support and
encourage. The Mentor has knowledge, experience, expertise
and can suggest other sources of help and ways of
finding out information. The Mentor will not tell
you what to do, be an expert on everything, make assumptions,
create false expectations or be judgemental. The Mentor
provides objective, informative and understanding
support.
Business Link has been working with BMS in its programme
of assistance to the small business community. Business
Link is an advisory service for small businesses offered
by the DTI. In Derbyshire this is delivered through
the newly formed single Chamber of Commerce.
Business Link provides one to one meetings, a variety
of workshops dealing with all aspects of running a
small business (see Dates for Your Diary on page 3),
advice and help with attaining funding, help with
developing business plans together with many other
valuable services. The services, on the whole, are
delivered free and in confidence with a professional
business advisor.
You can contact the Business Mentor Service on 0115
970 5550 and Business Link on 0845 6011038 or by visiting
