Suicide Awareness Partnership Training (SAPT) Derbyshire

FACT: Did you know that many people contemplate suicide at some point in their lives?

The aim of SAPT is to reduce suicide by 20% by 2012, in line with the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. This will be done via two main methods:

  • Half-day suicide awareness training seminars. The FREE training is open to everyone and we especially encourage those whose work is likely to bring them into contact with people who are vulnerable to suicide or self harm. Delegates are encouraged to offer help or influence 5 people over the 3 year period.
  • Thirty minute presentations that can be delivered to busy employers who may have vulnerable employees that could be at risk of suicide.

The training will cover:

  • The myths and attitudes of suicide
  • Facts – what we know
  • Risk factors and warning signs
  • What protects
  • How to help

Why do we need the Suicide Awareness Project?

  • The National Suicide Prevention Strategy reports that approximately 4,300 people take their own lives in England each year.
  • Suicide is the main cause of death in people with mental illness.
  • 95% of people who die by suicide had been admitted to hospital during the previous year due to self harming.
  • Most people deliberate suicide at some point in their lives.
