Tips for Trips with Young People
If you have not organised a trip with young
people before choose a trip to an organised event like a
skate park or a leisure centre.
Get say two of the young people to help you organise the
trip, trying to involve everyone in the organisation will
be difficult.
Use their expertise, they probably know more about the event/venue
than you do and will promote the trip enthusiastically to
others.
Get the Parental consent forms out well in advance and make
sure you have enough to cover any that may be lost or defaced,
usually about three times the amount required.
Contact your local school for advice and design a generic
form that will suit most outings to save time on the next
trip you do.
Appoint a leader who will take overall responsibility.
Make a list of the tasks needed to organise the trip and
check them off as you go.
If possible find someone who has done a trip before and
get their advice.
Involve young people in selecting the trip.
If the venue has its own house rules get a copy beforehand
and make the young people aware of them.
Involve young people in writing and agreeing to rules on
their conduct.
If doing an adventure activity use a registered provider.
Ask your local school for contacts.
Make sure parents are informed and provide written consent
for the trip and for you to authorise emergency medical
treatment.
Check you have insurance.
